The ecosystem MAHA-IoT

MAHA's main objective is to connect the elderly with their environment so that they can actively take part in the world around them, improving their autonomy and quality of life through IoT technology.

To this end, MAHA is built from the quintuple helix approach, a large collaborative space between different actors and organisations, where the benefits go beyond the elderly.

Governments, municipalities, hospitals, health systems, care centres...

Patients' associations, neighbourhood associations, foundations and NGOs.

Universities, research centres and European research projects.

Large and small companies in the health, biomedical and technology sectors.

Connecting all these areas leads to the creation of complex and more sustainable environments. In line with the European Commission, the Sustainable Development Goals and the European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing (EIP on AHA).

The value of integration

MAHA is one of the key solutions integrated into the GATEKEEPER platform, making it an interoperable technology tool that integrates into healthcare systems, This allows:

- Access to clinical data to improve quality and continuity of care.

- Exchange information from one system to another through standard interfaces.

- Ensure the transfer and portability of data between connected health systems in a secure and efficient way.

MAHA becomes a medical decision support application for all healthcare professionals in prevention and proactive intervention, especially with elderly patients:

- Possibility of customising content according to the needs of professionals and patients.

- Adaptability, adding new modules and content according to the specific needs of the health system and the target population.

- Assess the initial and progressive state of the citizen or patient for an appropriate and personalised intervention over time.

This project has received funding from the EU's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme, grant agreement Nº857223 under the European Gatekeeper project.

2 Experimental pilots in Spain

With 10,000 users in the Basque Country and 2,000 in Aragon, convened from Krognikgune and the Aragonese Health System respectively, will use and validate the MAHA mobile app.

MAHA will facilitate and complement the monitoring of individualised care plans, providing health information to its users and supporting their health decision-making.

Designed with end-users, it aims to be a health asset that helps to raise awareness and improve people's health and wellbeing literacy, promote self-management and contribute to a longer, independent and better quality of life for older people.

GOAL

To promote active and healthy ageing among the Basque population over 65 years of age. Through the promotion of physical activity, cognitive training and social participation, as well as direct access to educational materials on health, the aim is to enhance the independence, empowerment, autonomy and well-being of the elderly.

ACTION

In this quasi-experimental, longitudinal (pre-post, prospective and without control group) study, which will start in 2022, the participation of 10,000 elderly people and/or their carers is foreseen. A multi-channel and community recruitment strategy has been defined for the entire Basque territory in which different organisations and entities working with the elderly will participate:

With the collaboration of organisations and entities:

GOAL

The project GATEKEEPER in Aragon represents an evolution in chronic patient care through the integration of social and health care. It is hoped that the automatic analysis of patient data can contribute to improving their quality of life and the optimisation of resources. The ultimate goal is to avoid, delay and prevent the onset of chronic diseases, through the empowerment of patients and the adoption of healthy lifestyle habits.

ACTION

The Aragonese Health Service has designed this use case to work on the promotion of health and healthy lifestyle habits in the general population with the aim of empowering patients and their co-participation in the management of their health. To this end, we have worked together with the UPM in the development of a mobile application, which can be used by the population with educational content on the management of their health and knowledge of diseases, as well as the promotion of healthy habits and healthy life routines.
